Korea's Eulji General Hospital Improves Network Security with Fortinet FortiGate Platforms

Patient Data is protected and spam mail is down more than 70% thanks to the adoption of FortiGate™-300 system

SEOUL, Korea, April 6, 2005 - Fortinet - the confirmed market leader in Unified Threat Management and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based antivirus firewall systems for real-time network protection- today announced that it has supplied and installed its FortiGate™-300 Antivirus Firewall platform to Eulji General Hospital, a leading medical services facility in Korea.

Eulji General Hospital, a unit of Eulji Foundation, recently reviewed its need to deal comprehensively with security threats within its EM (electronic medical record) implementation. Patients' personal and medical information is saved directly in its servers exposing the data to security threats, and the hospital to the risk of reputation loss, and disruption to its operations. Eulji General Hospital has previously experienced slowdowns in its network traffic speed due largely to attacks of computer and network viruses. Lost productivity of hospital staff having to handle a daily influx of spam mail was also a deciding factor prompting adoption of the Fortinet solution.

The need for a secure, integrated and easily-managed firewall able to fend off security risks from hacking attempts, filter spam mail and stop intelligent strains of viruses prompted Eulji to implement Fortinet's FortiGate-300 integrated network security system. With Fortinet's solution, the hospital will enjoy anti-virus, firewall, IDS, IPS, traffic shaping, content filtering, and email filtering.

FortiGate-300 now helps Eulji General Hospital protect its 15-odd local servers connected to 400-plus clients, blocking computer viruses and network worms effectively. By fending off a broad range of security threats and harmful Web traffic, the hospital is now running a safer and more reliable network environment for its EM.

Chang Ho-yeol, Chief of IT Division of Eulji General Hospital, said, "Because of the characteristics of a hospital, leakage of patient information and medical records is the most sensitive issue, and we needed much more powerful tools to protect the system against such risks. In this regard, we have chosen Fortinet's FortiGate system largely because the hardware-based system offers superior security and performance and is highly cost-effective in terms of functionality and efficiency."

"Additionally, Fortinet's FortiProtect™ service helps us fight numerous computer viruses automatically, and, as a result, troublesome spam mail messages have declined by more than 70 percent, improving office efficiency dramatically,?he added.

Chang noted, "Currently, about 200 clients are hooked up to the network on the average. The FortiGate-300 system has enough power to function as network security equipment for now, but we are considering purchasing higher-capacity Fortinet systems in case network traffic soars visibly in the future."

Fortinet's FortiGate-300 Antivirus Firewall provides comprehensive content and network-level security for organizations that require gigabit speed without the substantial premiums that have been required to implement security using conventional systems. With its various integrated security functions, enterprises can block a wide range of computer viruses and network worms on the network and application stage.

All FortiGate systems are kept up-to-date automatically with Fortinet's FortiProtect Network, a global network that delivers virus and instrusion detection signature databases to FortiGate system worldwide.

"A growing number of hospitals are considering the introduction of computerized systems like EM, OCS (order communication system), PACS (picture archiving communication system), bringing about greater security problems and challenges when it comes to their data,"Said J.D. Kim, Country Manager, Korea "As hospitals have to manage a large amount of patients' personal information and medical records, more and more are switching to powerful ASIC-based unified threat management solutions like Fortinet's FortiGate systems."

With such a large-scale project, we had stringent technical requirements and the FortiGate security systems demonstrated the resilience, scalability and capacity needed to cope with the enormity of our project. Fortinet's integrated security platform and per-system licensing also allowed us to take a centralized security and management approach and thus avoid the management and licensing challenges associated with the implementation of servers and separate point solutions.
