The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) Makes an Educated Decision to Secure its Network with Fortinet

Deployment Helps the Education Institute Optimize its Network Security Consolidation Strategy

BANGALOE, India, July 13, 2010 - Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) - a leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions, today announced that National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) has chosen Fortinets Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions to consolidate its network security infrastructure. NITC has deployed the FortiGate®-620B enterprise-class security appliance and the FortiAnalyzer™ appliance for centralized reporting. Previously, the existing setup needed more robust regulatory compliance and the team needed to provision for increased bandwidth needs. NITC also found its single point solution for intrusion prevention (IPS) protection lacking due to its weak security approach. Thus, the team decided on migrating to a consolidated UTM platform with the ability to provide additional features such as firewalling, antivirus protection, Web content filtering in addition to IPS capabilities.

ÏFortinets solutions were deployed seamlessly with minimal downtime. In particular, the FortiGate-620B appliance offers the potent combination of consolidation, virtualization, high performance and manageability with seamless network integration, says Sumesh, the Faculty In-charge of the Campus Networking Centre at the National Institute of Technology Calicut. ÏVirtualization has also helped us achieve optimized network security operations with the added ability to customize performance according to users needs. Furthermore, FortiAnalyzer provides an excellent birds eye view of the networks threats. We strongly recommend Fortinet to any firm looking for robust, high performance network security infrastructure providing high reliability, he added.

Fortinets UTM solution stood out with the FortiOS 4.0 operating system, which allows IT administrators the ability to customize network requirements to allow only http traffic to pass through while achieving high availability and maximum network performance simultaneously. Fortinets robust hardware virtualization capabilities allow NITC to set up different rules for various inter-departmental networks with virtual domains (VDOMs), for a greater cost-performance advantage.

With this deployment completed during the first quarter of 2010, the outcome is favorable for NITC, as Fortinets network security solution has enabled the national institution to achieve better security and optimize its bandwidth usage. FortiAnalyzer has also allowed the system administrators to benefit from hassle free data intelligence and greater control of the information.

ÏEducational institutions are mandated to maintain a non-restrictive network environment for students to enhance their e-learning through Internet-enabled collaborative learning tools. However, this poses significant security risks, says Vishak aman, director of SAAC for Fortinet. ÏMigrating to a scalable, unified threat management architecture, is a step in the right direction for NITC to achieve a security-ready state and bandwidth optimization.
